Skiing Trip

For a weekend trip my parents and I went to Roundhill ski field. I loved feeling the wind slicing through my frozen face, as I sped down the slope. I enjoyed going over the small hills at the bottom because I felt free being out of control. After going up the T-bar for five minutes the view at the top was worth the ride. There was a stunning view of Mt Cook which shone brightly in the sun. I loved the warmth of the sun on my chilly face. I had an awesome day skiing.

Bloody Sunday

I am a man from Northern Ireland,
My ancestors found this land,
We have fought off countries for a thousand years,
But one Sunday that all ended in tears.

Bloody Sunday is what they call it,
The British decided that us Catholics just weren't fit,
We marched a peaceful march saying who we wanted to rule,
But the British soldiers on the side of the street decided to be afraid of us all,
The British soldiers fired off all those deadly shots,
I saw my friends wounded and dead, there were lots and lots.

This land was all the British wanted I really don't see why,
They've got plenty of land themselves, this makes me want to cry,
Right down to this very day,
The British still get their way,
But they have given us the right to vote,
Though that is about the only high note.

I know now today that we can solve this in peace,
When England has ended it's long term lease.

The Department Of Conservation Volunteering

The Department Of Conservation (DOC) has many voluntary experiences throughout New Zealand. Earlier this year Karen, Brent and Maria Wallace volunteered for DOC on Ulva Island, which is near Stewart Island. The duties involved - checking predator traps, maintaining the track, painting the hut and talking to visitors to the Island.
Throughout the ten days the Wallace family were on Ulva Island, they had plenty of spare time. They enjoyed catching blue cod, gathering paua and mussels, going swimming, taking heaps of photos and exploring new tracks.
When they were asked if they saw any Kiwi’s, Brent answered “We got to see a Kiwi close up”, Maria said “It even pecked my boot!” Karen replied “It didn’t appear to know we were there as we stood still watching in amazement”.
Karen commented “It was a great experience for the whole family to see birds living without the threat of predators”. Brent said “I’m amazed at the sound of the birds dawn chorus”. Maria agreed it was awesome saying “It was great to be able to help DOC but have a holiday at the same time”.
